Houston Build Trip

Houston Build Team Volunteer Spotlight

th to March 4th, Bend Area Habitat sent 11 volunteers to Houston, Texas to partner with St. Bernard Project in the rebuilding efforts following the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. While in Houston the team worked on two homes for families displaced by Harvey, Miss Lorie and the Moores. Most of the week was spent working on the home of Perry & Edith Moore. The flooding in their neighborhood was extreme and immediately following Harvey, the Moore’s spent two days in their car while they waited for rescue. They have since been living in temporary housing which requires Mrs. Edith to commute over fifty miles each way for work. The team helped get the Moore’s home nearly completed working on setting doors, putting in trim, tiling, staining, painting and cleaning.  The “Welcome Home Party” for the Moore’s was scheduled for March 5th. Thouhg we didn’t get to attend, we are excited to have helped and to know they are back home after being gone for so long! It was a humbling experience to see debris still piled along street curbs in Houston and to try and wrap our minds around the time and effort it will take to get all of the displaced families back home. The work in Houston is on going and the recovery will take years. We were eager and proud to represent Bend Habitat and serve in the capacity we were able to even for the short time we were there. Being a part of something bigger than ourselves is a satisfying feeling indeed! those who can do those who can do more Our Global build trips are typically somewhere abroad but because of all the natural disasters in our home nation we decided to do a domostic trip this time and are so thankful we were able to give back to this community still in great need. No construction experience is required for our build trips, just willing hearts and hands. Teams are typically a mix of those with and without experience and there is always work to be done for any level of skill or experience. The Houston team was able to fit in some fun and food while serving! During off hours we filled our time with a visit to the Space Center, perusing downtown, seeing the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern, the Museum of Fine Arts, and a few folks even saw Blake Shelton at the rodeo. We had food that ranged from BBQ, Mediterranean, Tex-Mex, and Seafood. The team was phenomenal and we couldn’t have asked for a more meaningful experience.   We wish the Moore’s and Miss Lori many years of happiness in their homes!
